About the City of Chula Vista, CA
Chula Vista is the second-largest city in San Diego County and the anchor of the South Bay, sitting between downtown San Diego and the border. The name means “beautiful view,” and for most of the last century the view was lemon groves, the city was one of the largest lemon-growing districts in the state before the orchards gave way to neighborhoods.
Today it’s really two cities sharing a name. West of the 805 you have the older Chula Vista: Third Avenue Village with its restaurants and Friday markets, the Heritage Museum, bungalow streets laid out in the twenties, and the industrial blocks near Main Street. East of the 805 is the newer half, Otay Ranch, Eastlake, Millenia, master-planned communities that went up through the nineties and two-thousands around parks, trails and the Elite Athlete Training Center.
The Bayfront is the next chapter. Decades of planning turned a working waterfront into a resort, convention space, and public park, and it has drawn attention back to the western side of the city after years of growth heading east.
That split shapes what ends up in our yard. The eastern neighborhoods are now twenty and thirty years old, which means the first generation of flat-screen televisions, desktop computers and home office equipment is reaching the end of its life all at once. On the west side, it’s older stock CRT sets, stereo equipment, and appliances that outlasted the houses they were bought for. Our recycling center on Anita Street takes all of it, free, from anywhere in Chula Vista.
