About the City of Bonita, CA
Bonita takes its name from the Spanish word for beautiful, and the valley it sits in earned it. This is an unincorporated pocket of San Diego County wrapped around the Sweetwater River, bordered by Chula Vista to the west and the Sweetwater Reservoir to the east, with the 805 and the 54 putting downtown San Diego about twenty minutes away.
What sets Bonita apart from everything around it is space. While the rest of South Bay filled in with tract housing through the seventies and eighties, Bonita held onto its large lots, its dirt shoulders, and its horses. Riding trails still thread through the valley and along the golf course, and it isn’t unusual to share the road with someone on horseback. Sweetwater Summit Regional Park and Rohr Park anchor the open land at either end.
The community keeps its own rhythms. Bonitafest brings a parade and street festival through the valley each fall, the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center keeps the area’s ranching history on display, and families move through the Chula Vista Elementary and Sweetwater Union High districts generation after generation. People tend to stay. Homes here pass down rather than turn over.
